Description
Background
The “Banana Amban” is also called the “Elephant” banana due to its size. It is a very large and long banana, which is rather floury in consistency.
The bananas are mostly sold by number and are a popular snack in Sri Lanka and are also often used on special occasions.
Taste & ripeness
The taste of the banana Amban is full-bodied, fruity-sweet and aromatic banana-like. I have very good memories of this banana, which sometimes bursts open like the Koolikuttu.
Just like with the Koolikuttu, the bananas break off easily when they are ready to eat. Sometimes the skin remains greenish despite being fully ripe.
Cultivation
The banana variety has very high standards and only grows under optimal conditions. The banana trees reach astonishing sizes and, like the red bananas, take a little longer to reach their full size. On the outside, this variety is easily confused with the banana “Anamalu”, which is a little thinner but has a completely different consistency.
