Description
Background
Another apple-banana: If you look at different banana trees and try to determine the varieties, it gets tricky with the “Banana Kollikutu”, because it differs from other varieties only by a small characteristic. This is not the only reason why this banana is very special. It is one of the most highly valued varieties in Sri Lanka and the “Banana Kollikutu” is often used as an offering in religious ceremonies. The taste of the banana can be very interesting and it is very popular.
Properties
The taste of the banana Kollikutu is sometimes reminiscent of vanilla and is delicately melting, aromatic, noble and sweet with a hint of tropical freshness. The individual bananas are around 15cm long. When ripe, the skin turns dark yellow.
A sign of ripeness is also when the banana is yellow to the stem. If the stem is still green, the banana should ripen a little further. It is very important that the banana is soft and can be easily detached from the banana comb, because otherwise it does not taste so good and is sometimes furry on the tongue.
Slight cracks in the skin are a sign of quality and this usually does not affect the fruit itself. Darker discoloration on the skin also shows better taste quality, as is known from other bananas.
If the bananas are already breaking off of their banana comb on their own or can be easily broken off, it is high time. The banana is now fully ripe and has reached the peak of its ripeness. However, this is not always the case, so you should keep an eye on the fruit.
