Description

Background
The “Banana Puwalu” is also called “Wathu Palu” in Monaragala. There is also a rarer black variety called “Kalu Puwalu”.

Taste & ripeness
When fully ripe, the “Puwalu” banana is extremely sweet and aromatic banana-like. Sometimes this banana is almost too sweet for me, which is why I have started to only half remove the peel and then eat it too. This is particularly interesting and tastes great. The bananas sometimes have something like crystallized dates. Overripe bananas quickly become mushy.
Just like with the “Kollikuttu” banana, the bananas break off the stem as soon as they are ready to eat.

Cultivation
This type of banana also has very high standards and only grows under optimal conditions. Because the bananas are somewhat special and it is not so common, it is often difficult to find tree ripe.
