Background and Availability
The Papaya “Red Lady” is, as the name suggests, of red color. It is a world-famous variety that is also grown on a large scale in Sri Lanka. In the meantime, however, other papaya varieties are on the rise. Nevertheless, the “Red Lady” variety has been available all year round and can be discovered at every fruit market.

Typical characteristics of Ripeness
The way the fruit ripens and the shape are so typical that the Red Lady can immediately be distinguished from other varieties. The peel turns yellow and then orange in five places until this color extends evenly over the whole fruit. As soon as the fruit is completely orange and becomes soft, you can enjoy it.

Taste & Consumption
The fruit is red-fleshed and reminds of a refreshing, sugar-sweet watermelon. This papaya is always a welcome refreshment or can be used in fruit salad if still cut resistant.
The fruit can of course also be cut in half and spooned out or e.g. eighth and then serve in handy pieces.

Harvest & Transport of ripe fruit
When harvesting, care must be taken that the still green fruit already has a strong orange in five places. Only then can the full taste be guaranteed. Of course, you have to persuade the farmers or pay accordingly to leave the fruit hanging for so long, since harvesting robbers (like birds or squirrels) will already cause crop losses in this case.
The fruits are very large and are usually harvested unripe for the local markets. They are often packed improperly & transported carelessly.
From the tree, however, the fruit should be packed immediately in the special papaya upholstery nets for safe transportation. Despite the hard shell and good ripening ability, it is often difficult to get a reasonable taste quality on the local markets, because for the reasons mentioned above, harvesting is generally taking place immature. (Whenever a spot turns just slightly yellow, or even less then that!)
Of course we prefer smaller fruits, but mostly the fruits weigh 2-3kg.
